Congressman Jake Ellzey, who represents Texas’ 6th district in the U.S. Congress, voted for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The bill aims to require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration in federal elections and provides states with tools to remove non-citizens from voter rolls. It also sets penalties for officials who knowingly register non-citizens.
“Secure elections protect every legal voter and strengthen our Republic,” said Congressman Ellzey. “Proof of citizenship is not optional. It is fundamental. The SAVE Act ensures that only American citizens decide American elections.”
Ellzey addressed misinformation about the legislation, clarifying several points:
– He stated that individuals who have changed their name can use updated identification such as a REAL ID, passport, or government-issued ID showing place of birth, and that states must provide a process for name discrepancies.
– He clarified that a passport is not required to vote; other forms of documentation such as a REAL ID or military ID with proof of U.S. birth are acceptable.
– He pointed out that states have removed non-citizens from voter rolls in recent years and emphasized that any unlawful ballot affects public trust in elections.
– Ellzey noted that current law limits states’ ability to verify citizenship during voter registration, and said the SAVE Act addresses this by giving clear enforcement tools.
Ellzey has supported measures focused on border security and election integrity throughout his tenure.
Jake Ellzey has served as the representative for Texas’s 6th District since 2021 after succeeding Ron Wright. He won his seat in Congress after defeating Susan Wright in 2021 and was re-elected in 2024 by defeating John Love III with over 65% of the vote. Ellzey was born in Amarillo, Texas, in 1970 and currently lives in Midlothian.
