Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center was the third largest nursing home in Ellis County during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility reported 144 available beds, surpassing the Ellis County average by 16 beds in the same period. It consistently had an average of 105.1 residents per day throughout the quarter.

The CMS gave Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center an overall rating of 3 out of 5, above the statewide Texas nursing home average of 2.7.

Ennis Care Center led Ellis County in size during the quarter with 155 available beds, while Focused Care of Waxahachie followed in second with 152 beds.

By the end of the first quarter of 2026, Red Oak Health and Rehabilitation Center had been issued one fine totaling $12,035 and received one penalty.

There were seven for-profit nursing homes in Ellis County at that time.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates indicate that the country’s 65-and-older population is increasing while numbers for those under 18 are declining. Between 2020 and 2024, the number of Americans age 65 and older rose by 13%, contrasted with a 1.7% decrease among those younger than 18. Over the past 100 years, the nation’s older adult population has surged, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study estimates that about half—roughly 28 million—of those age 65 and up could need long-term services and support. The report further forecasts that over one-third could require care in a nursing home at some point.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
