The Public Utility Commission has approved a new area code for Ellis County to support the growth in and around the Greater Dallas area.
The 945 area code will be implemented within nine months and overlap the three existing area codes: 214, 972 and 469. The new area code will allow Dallas to house additional phone numbers for its growing population.
According to the PUC website, the new 945 area code will be the 28th area code assigned to Texas. The 945 area code will keep the Ellis County area in a supply of new numbers for 13 years additional years.
Embedded in the November filing, the North American Numbering Plan Administrator said that without the new area code, the supply of phone numbers in the Dallas area will be depleted by the end of 2021. It was imperative for the Ellis County area to get assigned the additional area code, NANPA says.
Neustar Inc., the local company that also files petitions for NANPA, filed the petition with the PUC last year on Oct. 8.
The new 945 area code will also cover parts of Denton, Tarrant, Johnson, Kaufman, and Hunt counties.
