New research funded by the University of North Texas Health Science Center finds that startup businesses have a substantial impact on job creation in Tarrant County and will be crucial to the region's economic recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the City of Fort Worth and Sparkyard’s Fall 2020 Jobs Report, businesses less than a year old created 155,307 Tarrant County jobs from 2013 through 2018, with 25,157 jobs in 2018. Those numbers represent more than 3 times as many jobs than the recent Amazon HQ2 relocation was projected to bring to the area.
“As our economy recovers from the effects of the pandemic, this research shows that additional resources should be provided to encourage more job creation in this important but underappreciated segment of our local economy,” said HSC President Dr. Michael Williams, who has emphasized the need for Fort Worth to develop a more robust and better connected entrepreneurial ecosystem.
The 2020 Sparkyard Job Report is first-of-its-kind research in Texas, representing a new approach to showing the impact new firms have on local job creation.
