Bottom Line

While travel conditions are better than yesterday, travel is still discouraged until conditions improve later today. Some power outages and tree damage will remain possible today across the eastern and southeastern portions of the forecast area. Any lingering slushy or wet surfaces this evening will likely refreeze Friday morning.

Overview

  • Additional ice accumulation and the refreezing of wet surfaces last night is causing hazardous driving conditions once again this morning.
  • Treated well-traveled roads are generally wet and slushy while less-traveled and untreated roads are coated in sleet and ice.
  • Travel is discouraged through Thursday morning since low traffic volume will improve driver safety.
  • Slow improvement will occur this morning into this afternoon as temps rise above freezing, but we won’t get “back to normal” until the sun comes out Friday morning.
  • Ice has accumulated on all elevated surfaces (trees, utility lines, rooftops, etc.).
  • Thankfully, the winds will remain light between 5-10 mph which will limit the threat of damage, except where significant ice accumulation could still damage objects like trees and power lines.
  • Temperatures are currently near freezing and will slowly warm above freezing from east to west.
  • Rain and freezing rain will continue for much of the morning today.
  • Another round of cold rain will move in this afternoon and move from northwest to southeast.
  • Snow is no longer expected with this late afternoon round of precipitation.
  • Clearing skies are expected tonight with temperatures falling into the 20s.
  • Plentiful sunshine will return tomorrow and allow high to climb to the 40s/50s. Widespread melting will occur.

What We Are Certain Of:

  • Travel conditions are better today than yesterday, but still dangerous.
  • Temperatures will steadily rise above freezing for most…the only exception could be across Western North Texas where temperatures are only forecast to top out around 34-35.
  • Rain will continue this morning with a quick round of cold rain this afternoon and evening.
  • All precipitation will end this evening with mostly clear skies expected tonight.
  • Ice will start to melt today but will not fully melt until Friday (or Saturday at the latest).

What We Are Less Certain Of:

  • How warm we will get this afternoon and if the hours above freezing will be sufficient to melt the ice.
  • How widespread the icing Friday morning will be. A lot will depend on how much ice melts today.
